Amornphan noipalee Toshiba REGZA 42RV535U 42-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV

Reviewer: Thomas E. Williams, Saugerties, NY USA This is my first LCD TV and I'm very happy with it. Spent a lot of time over the last month checking out various 40-47" LCD TVs and finally decided on the Toshiba REGZA 42RV535U because of its quality and price (total $912). Due to my experience with both Toshiba and Samsung I favored these brands but there's no shortage of attract… Continue

Ann Stevenson Stress an ally? You bet.

Imagine this. A Weiner dog is skipping down the street in the late afternoon sun. His belly’s full. He’s holding his head high. Just as he’s passing a fenced-in yard, a hulk-like howl followed by an enormous set of gnashing teeth and the muscled body of a German Shepherd invades the… Continue

Ann Stevenson A love affair with light-emitting diodes

So what if I watch movies on my 13” laptop. It’s out of choice, you know, and preference. . . who am I kidding. I can’t STAND writing about HDTVs every day, especially when backlit LED-HDTVs show up on my “to write about at work” list. I used to leave work at work, but no more. It’s s… Continue

Mitch Carroll Home-theater solutions in action

As I mentioned in a previous posting, my parents invested in a new home theater system just last fall. And there was definitely a wow period. Not only did the old entertainment center’s replacement by a wall-mounted flat-panel HDTV and low credenza dramatically change the feel of the living room, but the full HD picture offered by the pairing of the Blu-ray player and 52” Sony LCD certainly gave movie night a super charge. But once the initial stupefaction had run its course, it was extremely ed… Continue

Ann Stevenson Social media goes viral: side effects may vary

r

Was having dinner with a few friends the other night when “social media” slipped into the conversation. Only social media, I’m learning, doesn’t quietly slip in to conversation. It leaps in with wild hair, flashing eyes, and many different costumes, like Facebook, Twitter, blogs… Continue

Melanie Who me? iPod?

I would not classify myself as an iPod person. I own one only because I won it in a contest at work along with a Bose Soundock. We loaded music on the iPod two years ago and haven’t changed anything since. We just don’t do a lot of activities where the iPod seems essential, but I find it creeping into our daily lives more and more. For instance, last summer we bought a new car, a Scion xB. Kind of ugly, and a little flashy, Scion is Toyota’s low end line made for a younger crowd.… Continue

Mitch Carroll Fit for fun, at least

It was a dark and snowy night. In January. In Montana. And we were racing cows. No, this is not some romanticized tale of rural ranch life in the West. It might, however, be an account of two generations coming together over a little technological levity. It was a cold, snowy evening at the end of January of this year. And we were in Montana. But my aunt, her two grade-school-age daughters, and my wife and I were warmly sheltered inside, racing digital heifers on the Wii. Previ… Continue

Ann Stevenson Pioneer and my Grandpa rolling with the times

Decided to take a Reader’s Digest angle on my blog this week. Meaning kinda sappy, but I can be like that sometimes. Okay, a lot of the time. Anyway, get your kleenex and make yourself a bowl of chicken noodle soup. It's time to look on the bright side of hard times. Recently, I’ve… Continue

Mitch Carroll Whatever the “official” date, DTV is already waiting for you

Recently released figures indicate that some 6.5 million U.S. households will not be prepared for a February 17, 2009 switch to digital television programming. Accordingly, the DTV Delay Act was passed last week by both houses of Congress, postponing the DTV switch until June 12 of this year. The president signed the act into law yesterday. In all likelihood, there are multiple reasons why so many households might be unprepared for DTV reception, chief among them a lack of information, misinfor… Continue
